Key Takeaways
The Route & What to Expect
The last stage follows Eskdale downstream from Boot and Dalegarth, through woods and riverside pastures, to Eskdale Green. It then crosses the low hills of Muncaster, above Muncaster Castle and its famous gardens, with the sea ahead for the first time since Morecambe Bay.
The walk ends at Ravenglass, the only coastal village inside the Lake District National Park. Its Roman bath house, part of the fort of Glannoventa, is among the tallest Roman remains still standing in northern Britain. It's a short, easy day, leaving time to celebrate by the estuary.
Getting to the Start & Finish
Start: Dalegarth station, near Boot, is the top terminus of the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway. Finish: Ravenglass station is on the Cumbrian Coast Line. Trains run south to Barrow, then along the Furness Line back to Arnside.
Always check current timetables. Rural services are limited in the evenings and on Sundays.
Where to Stay & Eat
Ravenglass has inns and B&Bs by the estuary, and Muncaster and Eskdale Green have more options just inland. The village is small, so book ahead in summer.
